Spring Newsletter
Hello one and all! I know we are officially in summertime but it still feels like spring to me, perhaps because of the odd icy shower. Really looking forward to sunnier times, Cornwall is coming out of hibernation, daffodils and bluebells are in abundance and I’m busy in my studio developing a new range of furniture for 2010.
I hope you like the new look newsletter and will want to keep on receiving it; but if you decide it’s no longer for you there is an unsubscribe button at the bottom of the page. Perhaps your friends and family would like to join my mailing list – just visit www.journeymanfurniture.co.uk where they can register online.
Since Christmas I’ve spent some time improving my website which now has a blog, so it would be great to hear from you if you would like to join in any conversations or add any comments. I’ve also been busy with several commissions and my new Collection, more of which below.
The Collection
Most of my work is undertaken on an individual commission basis with furniture designed and made to customers’ very specific requirements. The idea for producing a collection of furniture for everyday living came from a discussion with one of my customers. Just before Christmas she commissioned a simple dining table to fit into a relatively small space. She had trawled the high street and internet but found that the tables were either too large, too expensive or just plain ‘tat’ (her words!).
This led to thinking about producing a range of furniture for today’s living spaces, using simple designs in a limited range of locally sourced woods such as oak and ash. The furniture is produced using a mixture of hand skills and modern jointing techniques, it is all hand finished and because wood is a living thing each piece retains its individuality with unique striations visible in the finished product.
I’m really excited about this new collection as it means that by producing small batches of furniture the final price is very competitive with high street stores. At the same time I like to think the product is far superior as it is still made using many of the handcrafted processes. But why not judge for yourself? The Collection will be launched at the Contemporary Craft Fair at Bovey Tracey, Devon during 11-13th June.
Spalted and rippled ash dining table with a hexagonal smoked glass top

Quote from customer, ‘I am thrilled with my table and just love the spalted ash, I notice a different pattern each time I look at it. I like Nick’s simple, clean designs and asked him to come up with a design which would incorporate glass and local wood - with perfect results. I’m now waiting for my spalted ash coffee table!’
