Spalted ash mirrors

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Here is a shot of a spalted ash mirror that I made for The Contemporary Crafts Fair a couple of weeks ago, I have sold a couple of these already, which is great. They are available to buy direct from the gallery or online for £180.

Spalted ash mirror

Spalting of timber occurs usually when the log is left on the ground and various species of fungus live on and feed off of the log creating pigment change within the timber. The black and dark brown lines are ‘zone’ lines which the mycelium put up as barriers to stop other fungus invading their patch!

I have whole log of this spalted ash in the studio and have made a few commissions out of it so far including a lamp table, dining table, coffee table and of course the mirrors.

Here are the images as promised…

I found the USB cable for the camera, so here are a couple of images of the new collection, not professionally shot as yet but it gives some idea. When I do have some pro images I will put them up on the website in the portfolio – collections section.

Chair, Mirror, Side Table and Standing LampMirror

The furniture shown here is made in some beautiful rippled ash sourced from the Tregothnan Estate and Elm sourced from Somerset, I am not sure where the stainless steel elements are from but I think that it is fair to say that it is not local!

The ash is some of the most highly figured that I have come across, some of it is quilted, flamed, rippled, just beautifully figured.

The Collection is designed to be affordable, the chair  starts from £430, the side table starts from £380, the standing lamp starts from £275 and the mirror starts from £220 price depending on the wood or woods chosen.

The point of the collection is to show that  handmade designer furniture can be accessible to all. The cost of a piece of furniture from the collection is in line with what you would pay from some of the mid range high street stores.

Of course it would be fantastic if customers came directly to the gallery to purchase their local handmade designer furniture rather than trawl through the many stores offering soulless inferior produce imported into this country using vast amounts of resources…but I shan’t start that rant now…just be assured that this collection won’t cost the earth!

If you would like to know more about the collection or indeed anything else get in touch, I am taking orders!

Another glorious day!

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Beautiful warm weather and glorious sunshine! Unfortunately I have been stuck in the office all day catching up with lots of drawing, costing, research etc, been looking at some lovely lampshades.

Looking forward to the start of the next project  – I can open all the doors up and get cracking, it’s almost like being outside.

Just took some pics of the gallery etc, will have them up shortly (promise) if I can find the cable for the camera!

Rearranging the gallery…

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

It has taken me a day to rearrange and clean the gallery and get it looking fabulous! I can’t believe how dust collects in so many hard to get at places!

I now have several new pieces on display including a new collection which has been designed not to be one off pieces, but will be repeated. Images will be going up in the next couple of days, that is the plan anyway! Because the new collection will be repeated it means that the price of the furniture is far more affordable.

handmade furniture in the gallery

What I aim to do in the next year is to create two or three furniture collections that are attainable for all, I really would like to see more people buying local handmade furniture direct from the designer maker rather than sourcing it from a high street store.

The gallery is displaying some great art work by David Briggs and David McKinstry. On display are also mirrors and lamps and also smaller items including candlesticks, tea light holders, chopping boards and some turned work. Olivia Cassels also has some of her brilliant ceramic work on display.

I aim to be here at the gallery and studio as much as I can but due to the nature of the business I can’t always be here, if you would like to visit it is best to arrange an appointment to avoid dissapointment, just contact me.

I really am enjoying the summer, it has been so nice down here on the harbour in Hayle. Do come and see for yourselves!

The workshop is due its summer time blitz too, but I really don’t have time for it at the moment!

The Contemporary Craft Fair 2010

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Hi all, I would like to say a big thank you to all who came to visit the stand (A56) at The Contemporary Craft Fair at Bovey Tracey 11th – 13th June. It really was only a couple of weeks ago, I can’t believe how quickly these past few weeks have gone by and indeed the year!

The show itself was spectacular with so many talented craftspeople and so many things to do it was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. The organisers get it right year on year and improvements were made yet again, keeping  the bar open after the public had left was genius!

One shining star at the show was in my view Antonia Chiappe she makes the most amazing jewellery and wire frame sculptures. Please take a look at the work she designs and makes it is incredible.

I had a lot of visitors to the stand, many new subscribers to the newsletter and hundreds of compliments – if compliments had any monetary value I would be a very wealthy man indeed!

Journeyman Furniture at The Contemporary Crafts Fair 2010

I managed to get this snap during a quiet moment at the show!

I hope that  will see some of you there again next year and no doubt some of the leads generated from the show will materialise into some very interesting commissions.

The next show will be The Cornwall Design Fair at Trereife Park near Penzance on the 21st – 22nd August, I would really like to see some of you there, it is a great day out for all ages. You will probably hear more from me nearer the time.
